Academy for Gifted Children

In December 2015, we submitted an application to the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board (QLD) seeking approval to establish a Prep-Grade 6 non-state (private) school for a minimum of 25 students who have achieved the 99th percentile on IQ testing and who are ready to learn in our unique environment.

With the support of the University of the Sunshine Coast, the Academy will be the first University-based school for gifted children located on a University Campus.

See the Admissions page of this website for details of psychometric testing requirements given the criteria for admission to our one-day-school will be similar to the criteria for admission to the Academy although Academy students will need to have achieved a minimum of the 99th percentile on all aspects of the accepted psychometric tests. An in-home or in-person family interview with our Principal or panel is a critical aspect of the admission process. Further, careful consideration of the dynamics of the existing student body will be taken into account in determining which students are admitted.

We are also seeking approval to establish a distance education school for those students unable to attend the academy in person.

Subject to Government approval being obtained, we plan to commence our first classes for P-6 in January 2018 with the addition of Grades 7-12 and possibly kindergarten in 2019. The Academy will be located on the Sunshine Coast.

While we will initially cater for children in the P-6 age group (generally 5-12 years of age) there will be no actual grade levels at the Academy, rather children will be assessed upon entry, a personalised learning plan (PLP) will be developed in consultation with the family and child, and children will be grouped according to their ability. Once mastery of a subject or subject area is achieved, the child will be able to advance to the next ability grouping. We will have the highest teacher:student ratio that we can afford with an aim of 1:5. Teachers must have experience working with gifted children, preferably a post graduate qualification in gifted eduction, be passionate, curious and have a life-long learning mindset.

In keeping with non-state school fees of other academically selective schools, fees will be approximately $20 000 per year. We will seek donations, grants and crowd-funding sources to reduce fees for cases of hardship where possible. A very limited number of partial scholarships may be available as well as grants for assistance with the costs of private psychometric (IQ) testing.
